How We Test

We check your X-rays for any bone loss. Sometimes your X-rays may even show us built-up tartar. We measure your periodontal pockets. We all naturally have pockets around our teeth; however, when we have a periodontal infection (infection of gum and bone), those pockets get deeper, making it more difficult for you to adequately clean at home. You may exhibit bleeding upon our probing of your gums, which is another sign of inflammation and infection. Believe it or not, when we "poke" you, you shouldn't bleed.

What Causes It?

Many things may cause you to develop periodontal disease; some are even out of your control. Some factors that can increase your chances are genetics, smoking, diabetes, poor oral hygiene, not getting regular cleanings, stress, medications, etc. The main cause, however, is plaque, which builds up in your pockets, deepening them, causing you to lose attachment and eventually causing bone loss.

What Exactly Is a Deep Cleaning?

Deep cleaning, formally known as Scaling and Root Planing, is what we recommend to clear up the active infection present. The main difference between a regular cleaning, formally known as a prophy, and a deep cleaning is that we get your mouth numb so that we can properly clean any buildup of tartar that is present under your gums. A deep cleaning is followed by a 4-6 week perio-evaluation, and then, if everything is under control, you are placed on a perio-maintenance schedule where you come every 3 months for a regular cleaning with special focus on your periodontal health. If a deep cleaning is done correctly and is followed with at-home oral hygiene, the inflammation and bleeding of your gums should subside. Unfortunately, the bone loss will remain, but with the proper protocol, we can maintain it and avoid you losing more bone in the future. There are always cases where a deep cleaning may not be enough, and your dentist may refer you to a periodontist (gum and bone specialist).
